How I’d Choose Between Negril, Montego Bay and Ocho Rios
When I look at Jamaica, I do not start with the resort.
I start with the part of the island.
That sounds backwards when every booking site immediately throws hotel cards at you, but Negril, Montego Bay and Ocho Rios can produce three very different vacations.
I spend a lot of time comparing Jamaica, especially Negril, and I keep coming back to the same idea: pick the region first, then get picky about the resort.
Negril: choose it for the beach
Negril is the Jamaica I look at when the priority is:
- long beach days
- sunsets
- relaxation
- slower pace
- fewer reasons to leave the resort every morning
Seven Mile Beach is the star.
The tradeoff is transfer time from Montego Bay airport.
For a premium trip, I like organizing the transfer in advance rather than treating it as the first improvisation of the vacation.
Montego Bay: choose it for convenience
Montego Bay makes sense when you want:
- shorter airport transfer
- lots of resort choice
- nightlife
- golf
- excursions
- easy logistics
That convenience becomes more important on shorter trips.
If you only have four nights, losing less time to ground transportation can be worth more than having the absolute best stretch of beach.
Ocho Rios: choose it for activity
Ocho Rios is strong for travelers who want Jamaica to be active.
Think:
- Dunn's River Falls
- rainforest activities
- river excursions
- adventure parks
- more off-property days
If your ideal trip is breakfast, waterfall, zipline, lunch, river, dinner, repeat, compare Ocho Rios.
If the itinerary says "beach" six times, compare Negril.
Kingston: culture first
Kingston is not the traditional all-inclusive version of Jamaica.
That is exactly why it is interesting.
Music history, food and city culture play a much larger role.
For many first-time leisure travelers, I would not automatically replace the beach portion of the trip with Kingston.
For someone who wants deeper cultural context, it can be the most interesting part of the island.
How I compare resorts
A resort can look fantastic online and still be wrong for you.
I look at:
Beach
Long and walkable?
Calm?
Crowded?
Rocky?
Food
All-inclusive quality matters because you may eat most of your meals on property.
Adults-only or family
Adults-only can mean quiet and romantic.
It can also mean pool party.
Family-friendly can mean "children are allowed" or genuinely excellent kids clubs and multigenerational setups.
Those are different products.
Room category
Ocean view.
Oceanfront.
Swim-out.
Club level.
Butler.
Villa.
The names get ridiculous quickly.
The question I care about is: what do you actually get for the upgrade?
Transfer time
A perfect resort can be the wrong choice if you hate long drives and the trip is short.
If you made me choose quickly
Choose Negril if the beach is the point.
Choose Montego Bay if convenience matters most.
Choose Ocho Rios if you want an activity-heavy trip.
Choose Kingston if culture is the priority.
Then choose the resort.
Not the other way around.
